Our first concern is for the comfort and satisfaction of the families we serve. . .
This has been the Schoedinger Tradition since 1855. |

Since the early 1800's, many families have settled, lived their lives and made contributions, large and small, to the development of the Columbus community. But, since 1855, only one family has served so many Central Ohio families in time of need-and continues today with fourth, fifth and sixth generation descendants of the founder still caring and upholding the values so important to us all.
In 1855, German immigrant cabinet-maker Philip Schoedinger opened his first funeral parlor on South High Street in Columbus. One hundred and forty years later, fourth, fifth and sixth generation family members, along with more than 45 licensed funeral directors operate eleven neighborhood chapels, two crematories and a cemetery under the Schoedinger business name.
With the direction of each generation of family members, the company celebrated many firsts. The oldest continuously-owned family business in Columbus, the Schoedinger Company was the first to build a chapel expressly for the purpose of funeral services, located at 229 East State Street.
In 1912, the company celebrated their 57th Anniversary by purchasing the first motor hearse in Central Ohio. Schoedinger later was one of the first companies to air condition it's building and the first to offer guaranteed funeral prearranging. Today the Schoedinger Funeral Service not only serves more Central Ohio families each year than any other funeral business, the company now has become the first to offer complete service capabilities from cemetery inquiries to memorialization.
Fourth generation family descendants Robert and John are still active today in the family business. Day-to-day operations and decision-making are the responsibility of David and Jay Schoedinger, sons of John. Recently, sixth generation additions to the family business include Michael and Randy Schoedinger, who remain committed to the care, comfort and concern that people in Ohio have come to know as the Schoedinger trademark of business.
I THE MIDTOWN CHAPEL IS A COLUMBUS LANDMARK at 229 East State Street. The building was first constructed during the Civil War era, and until 1918 was the home of renowned Columbus physician, Dr. Starling Loving.
